Plan · one night or two

Two days on the Derwent, based at the Tower

Built around the days things are actually open: Salamanca is Saturdays only, MONA closes Tuesday and Wednesday, The Point closes Sunday and Monday.

Hobart rewards a plan that respects opening days. The three fixed points: Salamanca Market is Saturday only (8.30am–3pm); MONA opens Thursday to Monday, 10am–5pm; The Point serves dinner Tuesday to Saturday. A Friday-to-Sunday stay fits all three. Check-in is from 2pm and check-out before 11am, so the plan below starts after lunch on Friday.

Day one — Friday

  • Check in. Ask for a mountain-side room on a higher floor if you sleep lightly — the hotel's own tip.
  • Walk the foreshore path around the property and along Lord's Beach; the path joins the boardwalk.
  • Swim or sauna at the Health Club (open until 10pm, free for guests).
  • Dinner at The Point. On Tuesday–Friday the restaurant offers an early-evening seating at 5.30pm; otherwise book a later table. Smart casual.
  • If there is a show in the Showroom or the Entertainment Centre that night, this is when most of them start (published start times 7.30–8pm). Otherwise, the Birdcage Bar's free live music typically begins at 8pm on Fridays.

Day two — Saturday

  • Buffet breakfast at Boardwalk Bistro (6.30–10am), or coffee at the Café from 6.30am.
  • Salamanca Market opens. Walk along the river through Battery Point (the hotel estimates about 25 minutes), or take a short taxi.
  • From Brooke Street Pier, the MONA ferry takes about 30 minutes. Book museum tickets ahead — MONA recommends it.
  • Ferry back, then up kunanyi / Mt Wellington for late light — about 30 minutes' drive according to the hotel. Check the Pinnacle Road status first (closed 16–19 November 2026).
  • Dinner at Longhorn Smokehouse or Kwan Ho in the hotel; both list dinner from 5.30pm.

Day three — Sunday morning

  • Breakfast, then pack before 11am.
  • Option A: Cascade Brewery, about 10 minutes by car. Option B: the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens.
  • Check out. Leave the car in the free car park while you take a last walk, or head to the airport (around 20 minutes by taxi, per the hotel).

Sunday reminder: food and drink at Wrest Point carry a 10% Sunday surcharge. A public-holiday weekend adds 15%.

If you only have one night

Arrive Friday or Saturday, do The Point (Tuesday to Saturday) and the Birdcage, and spend the morning either at Salamanca (Saturday) or on the river path before check-out. Request a Deluxe Harbour room so that the view does some of the work.

If the weather turns

Hobart weather changes fast. TMAG and MONA are indoors; the Health Club is too. The hotel's FAQ says winter temperatures range from 4 to 12°C — on those days the mountain can wait.
