Where to eat and drink at Wrest Point

From a revolving dining room seventeen floors up to a café that stays open past midnight — what each venue does, when it opens, and when to book.

The hotel's own count is five restaurants and four bars, plus in-room dining. They range widely in price and mood, which is useful when you are staying more than one night: you can do the special-occasion dinner once and eat simply the rest of the time without leaving the building.

Hours as printed on each venue's official page, read 29 October 2026.

Three places where the hotel's own pages disagree: The Point's FAQ says it opens from 6pm during daylight saving and 5.30pm outside it; Longhorn's venue page says seven days a week while the FAQ says Monday to Saturday; and the Birdcage page says Friday and Saturday until 1am where the FAQ says 3am. Check the venue page on the day.

The Point

The restaurant at the top of the Tower has been there since the 1973 opening, and it is the reason many people come to Wrest Point who never stay the night. We give it its own page.

Longhorn Smokehouse

Longhorn takes the Southern American barbecue idea — rubs, sauces, slow smoking — and applies it to Tasmanian meat, with the river as the backdrop. The venue page mentions pork ribs, pulled pork, wagyu striploin and smoked beef brisket, a house range of sauces, and beers, cocktails and wines. Tables of 12 or more must order from the set menus, and groups of 21 or more go through a separate group enquiry.

Kwan Ho

Kwan Ho's name is explained on the hotel's page as a Chinese phrase meaning "Noble Man". It cooks Cantonese, Sichuan, Shanghai and other Chinese styles and encourages shared banquets. The dining room looks over the River Derwent, the Tasman Bridge and the neighbouring marina. It is run by the Me Wah Restaurant in partnership with Wrest Point, so it takes its own bookings (03 6225 7888), Federal Group gift cards cannot be used there, and a 15% surcharge applies on public holidays.

Boardwalk Bistro and Boardwalk Café

These two are where hotel guests end up most days. The Bistro serves the breakfast buffet, then lunch and dinner, and calls itself family-friendly with a focus on value. Its deck extends over the river; inside there are waterside booths. It publishes separate low-dairy, low-gluten, vegan and halal menus and a children's menu. The Café, in a light-filled atrium at the edge of the river, serves coffee from 6.30am and stays open until midnight most nights and 2am at weekends.

In-room dining

Dial 75. The room-dining page gives breakfast from 6.30am to 10.30am, then lunch and dinner from midday to 11pm (Sunday to Thursday) or 1am (Friday and Saturday); the Tower and the Motor Inn / Water Edge rooms each have their own menu. You must be staying in-house to order.

Two costs to know about

All food and drink at Wrest Point, including room service, carries a 10% surcharge on Sundays and 15% on public holidays — the hotel says this is indicative and subject to change. And dress: the property has a neat-and-tidy code for everyone, with The Point asking for smart casual on top.
