The Water Edge rooms are in the Riviera wing, a short walk indoors from the Tower and, in the hotel's words, "tucked in behind Lord's Beach". Of the twin room, the hotel says guests like them because they are light, bright and the closest accommodation to the water. The king rooms sit just above a walking path that runs around the property along the foreshore and lawns and joins the boardwalk.
Why the wing matters
The name is not decoration. The hotel's history page tells how Arthur Drysdale created the Wrest Point Riviera, which became a Hobart institution known for its dances, before the Federal Group bought it and built the casino tower beside it. Secondary sources date the Riviera's opening to 5 December 1939. Today the same complex holds the art deco Derwent Room and the Portlight Bar — once part of the Riviera Hotel and later Regines nightclub, per the venue page.
Water Edge or Tower?
Choose Water Edge if you want to step out to the river path before breakfast, if you dislike lifts, or if you are three sharing on a budget (the twin sleeps three). Choose the Tower if you want height, the 4.5-star fit-out, the suites, or the shortest walk to the Health Club on the Tower's lower ground floor.
The hotel grades Water Edge at 4 stars on its own room tiles, between the Tower (4.5) and the Motor Inn (3.5). Discover Tasmania repeats the same grades.
Requests worth making
Ask for a cot when you send the request rather than at check-in. If you want the king room specifically for the foreshore path, say "Water Edge King, path side" — we will pass it on, and the hotel decides on the day.
Rates quoted as 'from' prices on the hotel's own room pages when we read them on 29 October 2026. They move with dates, events and season, and the hotel says peak rates apply in summer. More on the Riviera years.
