Hobart · from the point outwards

Sandy Bay and the places around it

The hotel's best feature is where it stands. Here is what lies within a walk, a bus ride, a ferry or a day's drive.

Sandy Bay lies immediately south of Hobart's central business district (Wikipedia, secondary). Wrest Point occupies its point; Lord's Beach is beside the Water Edge rooms, and a foreshore path runs around the property to the boardwalk. Below are the places we would build a stay around, with the hotel's own travel estimates and the opening details published by each place.

Within walking distance (if you like walking)

Salamanca Place and the Saturday market

Salamanca Market runs every Saturday from 8.30am to 3pm in Salamanca Place, according to the market's own site. The hotel describes more than 300 stalls of Tasmanian produce, crafts and food, and estimates a 5-minute drive or a waterfront stroll. Go early; the hotel's FAQ calls summer the busy season for the whole city.

Battery Point

A historic suburb of Georgian and Victorian cottages, in the hotel's description. It suggests about 25 minutes on foot along the waterfront or under 10 minutes by car, and points to Arthur Circus — a circle of historic cottages — and the maritime museum.

Walking route: Wrest Point → Arthur Circus, Battery Point

A ferry ride away: MONA

The Museum of Old and New Art is 11 km north of Hobart. MONA's visit page says the best way there is its own high-speed catamaran from Brooke Street Pier, about 30 minutes each way, and that the museum is open Thursday to Monday, 10am to 5pm. Everyone needs a ticket and bookings are recommended; entry is free for Tasmanians but still ticketed, and MONA warns that some works may not suit children. From Wrest Point, get to Brooke Street Pier by bus, taxi or a walk along the river.

Route: Wrest Point → Brooke Street Pier (MONA ferry)

Up the mountain: kunanyi / Mt Wellington

The summit is 1,271 m, inside the 18,011-hectare Wellington Park. The park's site says the Pinnacle can be reached by car, bike, on foot or by shuttle bus, and warns of two things worth planning around: Pinnacle Road is closed 16–19 November 2026 for maintenance, and the park closes to all users on days of Extreme or Catastrophic fire danger. The hotel estimates a 30-minute drive. Take a warm layer in any season.

Short taxi rides

  • Cascade Brewery — founded in 1824 and described by the hotel as Australia's oldest operating brewery; about a 10-minute drive via Davey Street and Cascade Road.
  • Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) — a combined museum, art gallery and herbarium; the hotel says about 10 minutes by car.
  • Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens — established in 1818, 14 hectares, with a Japanese Garden, Lily Pond and Subantarctic Plant House. The hotel's page calls it a 15–20 minute walk; we would allow longer or take a bus.

When to come

The hotel's local-area FAQ lists the festivals that shape Hobart's calendar — Taste of Summer, MONA FOMA, the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, Ten Days on the Island and Dark Mofo — and says summer is peak season, when rates rise and availability tightens. It gives autumn temperatures of 9–17°C and winter of 4–12°C, with occasional snow on the mountain. Our journal has notes on summer and winter stays.
